Alessandro Doria, MD PhD - Core Director
Eduardo Vadia - Laboratory Assistant
Linda Hanna - Data manager
John Rogus, ScD - Consultant in Genetic Analysis
The Genetics Core was established in 1991 with the aim of promoting and facilitating genetic studies of diabetes and its complications in humans at the Joslin Diabetes Center and collaborating institutions. More than 1,000 DNA samples from human subjects have been collected in these years and are available to researchers. The Genetics Core also provides services assisting investigators in the use of these samples.
DNA panels available from the Core:
Multigenerational families with autosomal-dominant type 2 diabetes (33 families, 540 samples);
Unrelated subjects with type 2 diabetes (260 samples of which 82 lean and 178 obese);
Unrelated subjects with type 1 diabetes (192 samples of which 96 with renal complications and 96 without);
Unrelated, non-diabetic subjects (120 samples);
Unrelated subjects with type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease (under construction).
| Services available from the Core: |
| |
a. Preparation of high quality DNA from human blood samples; |
| |
b. Performance of and/or assistance with the following protocols: |
| |
|
1. gene mapping by radiation hybrid screening;
2. genotyping of microsatellites markers;
3. BAC library screening;
4. mutations screening by means of dideoxyfingerprinting; |
| |
c. Data management of clinical and genetic information; |
| |
d. Assistance with genetic analysis. |
Services provided and Pricing
There is no charge for the use of DNA samples. Charges for molecular genetic services depend on the nature of the services provided, but are usually limited to the cost of reagents (e.g. custom primers for library screening).
Location and How to Contact:
The Core is located in Room 467 on the 4th floor of the Joslin Building. Investigators wishing to use the Core resources should contact Dr. Alessandro Doria by phone at x4340 or (617) 732-2406, or by e-mail: alessandro.doria@joslin.harvard.edu. A detailed project description is required for the use of DNA samples.
