Objective:
The Administrative Core of the Joslin DERC serves several functions: (1) It provides for the overall direction, planning, and internal review of the grant supported activities; (2) coordinates the Pilot and Feasibility seed grant program; (3) coordinates and reviews the progress of each DERC Core Laboratory and the Pilot and Feasibility studies; (4) provides the vehicle for interaction with the External Advisory Board members; (5) supports the Enrichment Program provided by the Center; (6) supports the Computer Resource Core; and (7) provides financial accounting and monitoring for the management of each of the DERC components.
Structure and Function of the Administrative Core:
Administrative oversight for the Center is provided by the Director, Dr. Gordon Weir, and Associate Director, Dr. George King, Core Laboratories. The Executive Committee includes the Director, Associate Directors, and 3 other members: Drs. C. Ronald Kahn, Laurie Goodyear, and Andrzej Krolewski. The Executive Committee meets approximately every three months to provide for the review and assessment of all aspects of the DERC as research progresses over the project period and as research needs and emphasis change.
Director:
Dr. Gordon C. Weir serves as Director of the DERC and the Principal Investigator. He is responsible for the overall direction, planning, and setting of priorities for the DERC. As Head of the Section of Islet Transplantation and Cell Biology, holder of the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation Chair at Joslin, Professor of Harvard Medical School, and former Medical Director of the Joslin Diabetes Center, he bridges the Joslin and other major academic institutions in the Longwood Medical Area.
